Habitat Volunteer Spotlight: Ramona Schilling

Working under the theory that the best way to help yourself is to get out and help others, Ramona Schilling found her way to the Millstone Basin Area affiliate of Habitat for Humanity approximately 2 years ago. She became involved with Habitat after attending a function in Princeton sponsored by the organization. While there, she was impressed by a speech made by a previous Habitat home recipient, because, “she seemed so happy and passionate”. One quality of Habitat for Humanity that Ramona likes is the fact that “a sponsor family has to give back, and does not get something for nothing.”

Ramona is the Volunteer Coordinator for the Millstone Basin Area affiliate. This is a perfect job for her because, as she says, her favorite thing about the organization is the volunteers. Her favorite memory from Habitat is this past summer’s barbeque. She finally got a chance to meet many volunteers face to face after exchanging many phone calls and emails. While there, work was done on the house and of course, everyone had a great time.

When she first joined Habitat for Humanity, Ramona was coping with the challenge of unemployment. While speaking to Jeanne McCarthy, Youth Coordinator for the Millstone Basin Area affiliate, she mentioned that she was looking for a job. Sure enough, Jeanne was able to refer her to someone and then she got her job at her present company. So, an unexpected opportunity came to Ramona, yet another positive experience from her participation with Habitat.

Many charities just ask people to donate money. “Although Habitat is always happy to accept money and charitable gifts, it's more about getting your hands dirty and donating your time” says Ramona. “I believe that when you give of your time, it's a very precious and generous gift.” The Millstone Basin Area affiliate is lucky to count Ramona Schilling among its members and is pleased to Spotlight her commitment to the organization!
