Habitat Volunteer Spotlight: Emil Kohut

Can’t think of anything to give up for Lent? Instead of taking something out of your life, why not add something to it? That is exactly what Emil Kohut, our current spotlight member, did about three years ago, when faced with the challenge of deciding what to give up for Lent. Emil joined the Millstone Basin Area Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity to give something back instead of giving something up.

Emil is an electrical engineer with an affinity for construction. He built the house where he, his wife and his son live today. He now puts that training and experience to work for others through Habitat for Humanity. Emil has served as a Group Leader for the Building Committee on the most recent house finished by the Millstone Affiliate. Having built his own home, Emil learned some of the tricks of siding and roofing as well as the potential mistakes. He enjoys leading other volunteers on these jobs to ensure things get done just right.

Emil has a seasonal job with Six Flags Great Adventure as a stage technician and also provides hospitality services to the concert performers at the park. The seasonal nature of his job allows him time to devote to the building projects conducted by our Habitat affiliate. Emil is also an entrepreneur who hopes to build a small company that will manufacture wireless gadgets related to the music/stage performance industry.

If you ask Emil what is his favorite thing about being involved with Habitat for Humanity, he’ll tell you “I can ride past a house and say I helped to build it”. Our affiliate is fortunate to have a volunteer like Emil!
